Hindu History Through Stories Part 1: The Ramayana
The Beautiful Tree Program presents Hindu History Part 1: The Ramayana, an interactive course designed for diaspora youth (ages 10+). Far from being a simple tale or “myth,” the Ramayana is an Itihāsa—a record of what happened—conveying both historicity and timeless wisdom. This course combines storytelling with deep analysis, encouraging participants to think critically while appreciating the moral, spiritual, and historical dimensions of the Ramayana.
Students will not only explore the narrative of Sri Rama, Sita, Hanuman, and Lakshmana, but also examine character strengths, dilemmas, and choices that shaped Dharma in action. Archaeological, geographical, and cultural evidence affirming the historicity of the Ramayana will also be discussed, dispelling common misconceptions that label it as “mythology.”
What This Course Explores
- Historicity of the Ramayana – How literature, archaeology, geography, and living traditions affirm it is Itihāsa, not myth.
- Character Analysis – In-depth exploration of Sri Rama’s leadership, Sita’s strength, Hanuman’s wisdom, and Lakshmana’s devotion, integrated with the storyline.
- Dharma in Action – How characters faced trials, ethical dilemmas, and responsibilities, and what that means for us today.
- Addressing Misconceptions –Learning to thoughtfully challenge the colonial narrative that reduced the Ramayana to “myth,” and the misrepresentations of its characters and their actions.
- Critical Thinking for Diaspora Youth – Drawing parallels between the challenges of Ramayana’s characters and the identity struggles Hindu youth face in modern society.
- Universal Lessons – Values of compassion, courage, service, and respect that make the Ramayana relevant across time and place.
