Hindu Gods Through Stories

The Beautiful Tree Program presents Hindu Gods Through Stories, a 12-week online course for youth ages 10+. This course brings alive the stories, symbolism, and traditions of Hindu deities — Ganesha, Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Kali, Hanuman, and others — helping students understand not only who they are, but also the values and qualities they represent.

Through storytelling and reflection, students will explore the role of deities in culture, festivals, temples, and pilgrimages. By the end of the course, each student will be encouraged to choose an Ishta Devata — a personal deity whose qualities they admire and wish to embody — making devotion both meaningful and inspiring.

What This Course Explores

  • Symbolism of Hindu Deities — how forms, attributes, and vehicles (like Ganesha’s mouse or Shiva’s trident) convey profound spiritual truths.
  • Stories of Gods and Goddesses — exploring narratives of creation, protection, devotion, and wisdom.
  • Temples, Festivals & Pilgrimage — significance of sacred sites such as the Ashtavinayaka temples of Ganesha, and how traditions keep Dharma alive.
  • Living Qualities of the Divine — seeing how worship and reverence bring forth values like wisdom, courage, compassion, and resilience in daily life.
  • Why Symbols Matter — how Rishis used symbols to express divine qualities, and how these symbols still guide spiritual practice today.
  • Personal Connection — by the end of the course, each student will be encouraged to reflect on the deities studied and choose their Ishta Devata (cherished deity) — the one they feel most inspired by, building a personal bond of devotion and understanding.

Why This Course Matters

In today’s world, Hindu deities are often misrepresented as “idols” or reduced to mythology. This course empowers students to:

  • Discover the deeper meaning behind forms.
  • Understand how symbols become living guides for spiritual growth.
  • Appreciate Hindu Dharma’s pluralism and creativity in expressing divinity.
  • Build confidence in explaining their tradition to peers in a multicultural setting.
  • Develop a joyful, personal connection to their heritage — leaving the course with their own chosen Ishta Devata, a cherished pathway of devotion and inspiration.
