Dharma and Religion
The Beautiful Tree Program presents Dharma and Religion, a 12-week online course for youth ages 12+. This course helps students understand the profound differences between the concept of Dharma and the idea of Religion, offering clarity on one of the most misunderstood aspects of Hindu thought.
Rather than framing Dharma as a rigid belief system, the course explores it as a universal framework of truth, responsibility, and harmony — guiding human life in its fullness. Students will learn how Dharma stands apart from dogma, commandments, and exclusivity, while appreciating its emphasis on diversity, adaptability, and the pursuit of higher purpose.
What This Course Explores
- Dharma Beyond Religion — understanding Dharma as truth, duty, and balance rather than fixed belief or creed.
- Why Hindu Dharma is Not “a Religion” — examining why applying Western categories to Hindu thought creates misconceptions.
- Diversity and Flexibility — how Dharma embraces multiple paths, practices, and interpretations without losing its core essence.
- Personal and Universal Dharma — connecting one’s individual role (sva-dharma) with the larger order of the universe (sanatana dharma).
- Living Dharma Today — how Dharma applies to daily life, decision-making, and identity in a multicultural world.
