Dear School Administrator (s),
We, the Hindu Parent Network, a support group for Hindu parents, would like to bring to your attention the issue of bullying and harassment targeting Hindu students in several schools.
These incidents are linked to the recent escalation of conflict between India and Pakistan, involving instances of racial, ethnic, and religious profiling, as well as the use of slurs and derogatory language. The situation is further aggravated by social media trends driven by powerful algorithms that can incite harmful behavior. These incidents not only traumatize the victims but also make the school environment less conducive to learning and growth for all students.
To maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment, we urge your administration to take proactive measures to address this issue. We recommend the following actions:
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS:
1. Recognize and Address Hinduphobic Behavior:
- Educate staff and students to identify behaviors and slurs specifically targeting Hindu students. This education is critical because, as an NCRI study had pointed out, anti-Hindu hate often comes in coded language and imagery, making it hard to spot.
- Include Hinduphobia within anti-bullying and harassment policies to ensure explicit recognition.
2. Encourage Reporting:
- Foster a culture where students feel comfortable reporting incidents.
- Implement anonymous reporting mechanisms to ensure safety and confidentiality, protecting students who speak out.
- Regularly review and address reported incidents to build trust within the school community.
3. Promote Cultural Sensitivity:
- Maintain culturally inclusive classrooms that respect and honor the diverse backgrounds of all students. Invite students to share about their culture, sacred symbols, and festivals.
- Include an accurate and respectful representation of Hindu culture in diversity and cultural programs.
- Provide training for educators to recognize and respond swiftly and appropriately to discrimination based on religious or cultural identity.
4. Support Affected Students:
- Engage school counselors to provide emotional and psychological support to affected students.
- Create safe spaces and peer support groups to help students process their experiences and feel supported.
- Facilitate open dialogues where students can discuss concerns without fear of retribution.
We are here to support you in your efforts to make classrooms safe and conducive to learning. Please feel free to contact us.
