Kolam - A Ritualistic Math Art Form

In ancient India mathematical ideas were woven into the metaphysical, religious, and aesthetic fabric of the society. There were no distinct separations as far as knowledge was concerned.

In her presentation Swati Dave will discuss the connections between mathematics and Kōlam, an ancient everyday ritualistic art form created on thresholds by Tamil women.  The discussion will lead into the interdisciplinary connection of this art form to anthropology, philosophy, and storytelling. The concluding remarks will focus on the use of Kōlam as a pedagogical tool in K-12 mathematical curricula.
